Welcoming the Expansion
Of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus
To the Senate
Today, February 15, 2006, human rights advocates and organizations are gathering in the Russell Caucus Room, United States Senate, to celebrate the expansion of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus to the Senate.† We are pleased to know that the Caucus, initiated by Congressman Frank Wolf and Congressman Tom Lantos, now includes Senator Sam Brownback and Senator Tom Harkin, as its Co-Chairs.† The expansion of the Caucus from the House to the Senate does not only widen its cope of activities but also strengthen its advocacy and influence.
With this expansion of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus we believe that human rights and democracy are now recognized both by the Congress and the Administration as basic factors for peace, stability and sustainable development of any nation around the world in the new millennium.† All human rights advocates, especially the Vietnamese overseas and the Vietnamese human rights defenders inside Vietnam, will welcome this new development. The human rights defenders inside Vietnam will certainly find in this new congressional forum not only as a signal for more effective support for their efforts, but also as a more positive step toward the betterment of human rights in Vietnam.
I therefore heart fully welcome this significant event and wish all the best for the Caucusí works and pledge to co-operate with its Co-Chairs in any way I can for the common cause of human rights and democracy for Vietnam and for all other countries around the world.
